History

Founder

Bungie was founded in May 1991 by Alex Seropian self-publish their video game storm, Operation Desert. The origin of the name "Bungie" is the subject of conflicting answers. Many in the business of treating it as a closely guarded secret, and a whole bonus disc included in the Halo 3 Legendary edition states the name is "the decisive factor in a dirty joke, explanation has already been used by Bungie for other explanations for questions secrets with another society. Depending on the Scrapbook Marathon Seropian "anxious that he would be the name of your company, finally settling on "Bungie" because it "sounded fun."

The company's first game Gnop called! (Pong spelled backwards) and be free. The team focused on the Macintosh platform is not, personal computers based on Windows because the Mac market Jones was more open and have been raised on the platform. ! After Gnop, Bungie produced Operation Desert Storm, which sold 2,500 copies, and the role Minotaur The Labyrinths of Crete in 1992.

Bungie next began work on its first 3D game, Pathways Into Darkness, which was published in 1993. Pathways was produced by a two-man team consisting of Jones and his friend Colin Brendt. The game was moderately successful, and attracted the attention and money to the company. Shortly after he moved Bungie a one bedroom apartment for a study on the South Side of Chicago, Bungie composer Martin O'Donnell said the study, the school next to a crack house a daughter of former "smelled like a fraternity house after a long weekend and reminded the staff of a language of the horror video game Silent Hill.

Marathon, Myth and Oni

Bungie's next project began as a loose sequel to Pathways in the dark, but has become a futuristic first-person shooter called Marathon. The success of the first game led to a sequel, Marathon 2: Durandal, which later was the first Bungie game ported to Windows 95. The series features several items, including cooperative play, which led later games for Bungie.

Bungie's success gave rise to a large community of third-party developers parties as well as a brief news bulletin published by BBS. Following the success Marathon, Bungie released the myth of the game series, which emphasized management of the tactical unit rather than resource gathering model of other combat strategy games. Myth games won several awards and has generated a large online community and active. Myth: The Fallen Lords was the first game that Bungie released simultaneously for Mac and Windows platforms. In 1997, Bungie West set up a studio Bungie in California. first and only game of Bungie West Oni is an action game for Mac, PC and PlayStation 2.

On June 19, 2000, shortly after preview Halo at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2000, Microsoft announced it had acquired Bungie Software and that Bungie would become part of the Microsoft Game Division under the name Bungie Studios. Halo would be developed as an exclusive title for Xbox. The reasons for accepting the offer of Bungie by Microsoft, were varied. Jones said that "no I remember exactly the details, everything was a blur. We had to talk to people for years and even published yearsefore Marathon, Activision made a serious offer. But the opportunity to work in Xboxhe opportunity to work with a company that took the game seriously. Before we worry that we would get bought by someone who just wanted Mac port and not a clue. "Martin O'Donnell, who joined Bungie as an employee of one tenth day before the merger was announced, remember that the stability the Xbox as a development platform is not the only benefit. Around the same time, it was discovered that the Asian versions of Myth II could completely erase the disk drive of a player, the ruling has led to a run of games before they ship, which cost nearly a million dollars from Bungie. O'Donnell said in a podcast Bungie point created financial uncertainty, while accepting the offer was not something "Bungie had to do." Seropian and Jones refused to accept the Microsoft offer until the studio has decided to surrender.

After the rescue, the rights to Myth and Oni have been transferred to Take-Two Interactive under the tripartite agreement between Microsoft, Bungie and Take Two, most developers Oni of origin have to continue working on Oni until his release in 2001. Halo: Combat Evolved, meanwhile, has become a critically acclaimed success, sold more than 6.5 million copies and becoming the flagship Xbox franchise.

Halo 2 was released on November 9, 2004, killing more than 125 million dollars the day of liberation and the establishment of a record in the entertainment industry. Halo 3, the latest installment in the Halo trilogy, was released on September 25, 2007 and surpassed Halo 2 folders, $ 170 million in its first 24 hours the release of the game and become the most pre-ordered in history.

This informal culture, creativity has been one of the reasons that Microsoft was interested in acquiring Bungie although Jordan Weisman said that Microsoft has almost destroyed the culture business development, as he had done with FASA Studio. Studio head Harold Ryan said that while Bungie was bought by Microsoft, the team was still independent:

One of the first things that [Microsoft] sought after acquiring Bungie, after trying to assimilate completely, Bungie was moving to a building Microsoft standard with the rest of the group games. But unlike the rest of the teams above, move the offices of Bungie Business Is not Microsoft that broke all the walls of this part of the building and sat in a large open environment. Luckily, Alex and Seropian [and Jason Jones, Bungie founder] was very firm time to stay a little apart and isolated.

Microsoft finally moved the study of Kirkland, Washington, where the company has remained ever since. A Despite the move, the financial analyst Roger Ehrenberg said that Microsoft's Bungie marriage "doomed" because of these fundamental differences. Bungie has also highlight your tired of the new IP address aside to work on the Halo franchise. Edge describes the typical employee at Bungie as "at once irreverent and loyal passion, fiercely self-critical, full of excitement about the achievements of the company, whatever dark. [Y] recruited from his fan club dedicated "
