xbox 360 problem! urgent help!?

Ok i've decided to play on my xbox 360 first time in over 5 months since i got banned from xbox live (chipped xbox). Anyways i played yesterday it was all good, today i played again .. the game loaded .. froze .. restarted again .. game worked then froze .. game loaded and froze .. restared again .. red lights Ring of death .. left it a while restarted .. disapeared but frezes at the starting logo. I took the hard disk out, disk out restarted and it doesnt freze, i stick in the disk and i can play .. but if i stick the HDD in it frezes .. well it restards the console then it frezes at logo. Somtimes the red lights come then it disapeares .. wtf is happning lol and no i cant return it to microsoft if its broken then oh well guess im getting a ps3...
