Which XBOX 360 bundle should I buy to benefit from Xbox live?

My boyfriend wants an Xbox 360 and I looked at some of the bundle deals. I originally set out to get the $199 bundle, but later heard that in order for him to play LIVE he will need the $299 bundle. I don't know about all this stuff, and I hate to ask my boyfriend which one I need to get. (it takes away the surprise) But he wants to play live and I just want to know the minimum I'll have to spend for him to get that! Help please!

It doesn't really matter what kind of x-box you get, being able to play live is just a matter of having a subscription and internet connection, but if he wants to download stuff, it's good to have a hardrive to store things in, and I believe an x-box 360 elite has the maximum built-in hard drive and is incapable of the red light, which is something that happens to regular x-box 360's when they break. I don't know much about it, just look it up on wikipedia.

But yeah, try to get him an x-box elite if that's not too expensive, either way, if he needed more space to download stuff, he could get an external hard drive.
