How do you connect to Xbox 360 live using a modem? (Direct Connect)?

Recently, my friend logged on using Xbox Live a wireless router and things on my Xbox. Then she had to leave. then plug a everythin. I said only make a direct connection in place. The thing is I have no idea what it is. What are the steps? So far, I had the Ethernet cable from my computer and put it on my Xbox 360 to the rear. I tested the connection and reads the address IP. What should I do? if it helps, I have a gateway with Vista and my 360 is an arcade version, but I have a 20 GB hardrive. Thanks for your help. the rope that is im using CAT 5
