How you do that is altogether up to you. As long as you are exercising, you can go with-out the toys. That is, unless you enjoy them in which case, I say go for it.
Some of the best forms of aerobic activity are the conventional sports. If you get together and play basketball twice a week with friends, this alone may be enough to keep you fit and healthy. The important thing is to get some kind of cardio activity, and to make it something that you like enough to keep it up. Personally, my favorite cardio activity is one that quite a few specialists have agreed is one of the most healthy forms of exercise workouts: I adore swimming. The benefit of swimming is that it works the entire body at once. A lot of exercises, such as running or soccer, just work the legs, or at most only partly work the upper body, but when you swim there is no part of you that isn't getting some sort of work-out. This is awesome for you, and in addition, there is not any impact. Running will wear down your knees, as will a lot of the popular cardio activities, but swimming does not compress the joints, so there is no compromise to the health gains that it holds. I love this cardio activity, but it may not be the perfect one for you. The best advice I have is to join a fitness center for a month. The majority of gyms even offer a free session with a fitness trainer. If that's the case make sure and inform your fitness trainer that you want to try a lot of exercises so that you can find an aerobic activity that you like so you will stick to it. This will let you try out a lot of different cardio exercises and discover which ones you enjoy.
